In April 2015, Professor Dr Dr Stefan Barth joined the Department of Integrative Biomedical Sciences, Institute of Infectious Disease and Molecular Medicine (IDM) at the Faculty of Health Sciences, as the Chair in Cancer Biotechnology. This is part of the National Research Foundation (NRF) funded South African Research Chairs Initiative (SARChI).

Prof Barth’s research uses medical biotechnology such as antibody selection technology and protein engineering and expression to develop knowledge-based recombinant immunodiagnostics and therapeutics.

Prof Barth graduated at the Friedrich-Wilhelms University in Bonn in Botany and Genetics holding a PhD in Biology. At Cologne University, he obtained a DMSc in Experimental Medicine. At the RWTH Aachen university he was Professor for Experimental Medicine and Immunotherapy and in parallel worked at Fraunhofer IME in Aachen heading the Department of Pharmaceutical Product Development focusing on the development of immunodiagnostics and therapeutics. He is the co-founder of several start-up biotechnology companies in Germany.
