The Faculty of Health Sciences hosts an annual oath-taking ceremony for final-year undergraduate candidates to pledge their commitment to serving patients with integrity. It is combined with prize-giving, an opportunity for final-year students who have achieved academic excellence over the year to be acknowledged.

The 2025 ceremony will be historic as it is the first time that the oath will be read out in the three languages of the Western Cape: English, isiXhosa and Afrikaans. The rationale behind this multilingual approach is to give expression to the updated UCT language policy, whose tenet is to embrace the extraordinary diversity in South Africa and promote inclusivity in teaching, learning, research and communication. This includes supporting marginalised languages, such as isiXhosa as a language of instruction, alongside English, and encouraging students and staff to incorporate multilingual approaches into their academic work.
