Commemorative Plaque

"The Frances Ames Room commemorates an outstanding clinician and inspiring teacher who stood for human rights and justice, despite pressures to the contrary being exerted upon her. In so doing, she demonstrated exceptional courage, compassion and professional integrity, to the lasting benefit of the medical profession of South Africa. Professor Ames obtained her MBChB from UCT in 1942. She headed the Department of Neurology at Groote Schuur Hospital for ten years (1976 - 1985) and continued teaching at UCT until shortly before her death in 2002. She remains an inspiration to colleagues, students and all who knew her"

On 18 April, conference room 4 was renamed the Frances Ames Room, in honour of one of South Africa's most respected doctors and human rights activists, an emeritus professor of neurology at UCT who died in 2002.
