Honouring the Legacy of Prof. JP Van Niekerk (1936 - 2025)
The Faculty of Health Sciences invite you to join in celebrating the life and legacy of Prof. JP Van Niekerk.
Appointed as the Faculty’s first Deputy Dean in the early 1970s, Professor van Niekerk played a pivotal role in strengthening institutional governance and academic development during a formative period in the Faculty’s history. His leadership was instrumental in laying the groundwork for innovation, collaboration, and excellence in medical education.
Among his most enduring contributions was his role as the driving force behind the development of the Barnard Fuller Building, originally envisioned as a postgraduate medical centre dedicated to advancing continuing medical education. Today, the building stands as a lasting testament to his commitment to academic excellence, interdisciplinary engagement, and service to the profession.
Beyond academia, Professor van Niekerk was deeply devoted to sport, particularly squash, where he was widely regarded as a legend. He served the Western Province Squash Association and UCT Squash with distinction and was an Honorary President of the UCT Squash Club, leaving a legacy of mentorship and sporting excellence.
