Statement from the FHS Dean: Support for Prof Cyril Karabus
Further to the Vice-Chancellor's communication on the arrest of Professor Cyril Karabus, I wish to express deep concern and bewilderment at the detention of our former colleague and eminent paediatric specialist by the authorities in Dubai on August 18, 2012.
Professor Karabus, who is 78 years old, served as Head of the Department of Oncology and Haematology at the Red Cross Children's Hospital for more than 35 years.
He is an internationally respected paediatrician who has a global reputation as a specialist in paediatric oncology and haematology. A man of integrity, he has served our country and its children with compassion and deep commitment to the best possible care, and played a significant role in the training of young doctors and specialists across the world.
We share the grave concerns of Professor Karabus' family about the impact of his imprisonment on his fragile health. We assure you that the family is being supported during this difficult time, and that we are respecting their wish for this to be done in a manner that does not aggravate the situation.
While many feel helpless, you may wish to show your support by signing the petition on Avaaz.org as well as the Prof Cyril Karabus page on Facebook or by contributing to the trust account established to help fund his legal costs.
The trust account details are:

We hope that the justice system will be fair to this selfless man, and look forward to his release.

Dean
