The University of Toronto launched in January 2023 the Health in Africa series, which aims to bring together Mastercard Foundation Scholars at U of T, faculty/staff/students at African Partner Universities, to maximize learning and networking within the African Higher Education Health Collaborative Network. We are now pleased to invite you to attend the second session on Mental health in Africa: roots, controversies and future by Dr Dawit Wondimagegn, from Addis Ababa University. During this session, the participants will familiarize themselves with the mental health landscape of Africa and be introduced to some of the controversies surrounding mental health in Africa.  

 

Dr. Dawit Wondimagegn Gebreamlak is an associate professor of Psychiatry at the department of Psychiatry, School of medicine, College of Health Sciences, Addis Ababa University and a Consultant Psychiatrist and Psychotherapist at Tikur Anbessa Hospital, Addis Ababa Ethiopia.

He is also Director for the Ethiopian national center of the African health observatory leading a work on health policy related knowledge synthesis and translation and continues to serve as the Co-chair and director of the Toronto Addis Ababa academic collaboration.

He has published over 40 papers in the areas of mental health, mental health policy, psychotherapy adaptations, colonial structures of power in higher education, ethics and culture and mental health.

A poet and novelist as well, he published a book of poems, “Bet yemetu Hasaboch” and bestselling novels “ alemenoer” and Alemaweke all in his native language Amharic
