This specialised course is aimed at persons who perform procedures on, care for, or euthanise animals for scientific purposes including for research, testing or teaching at UCT and in Africa. The course is broadly attended by scientists who conduct and design animal studies and teaching activities, post-graduate students, veterinary and para-veterinary professionals, and animal ethics committee members.

The course is accredited by the Federation of European Laboratory Animal Science Associations (FELASA) – one of only two such accredited courses outside of Europe. 

Successful completion of the course is a requirement of the UCT FHS Animal Ethics Committee for all persons who will work hands-on with animals in the Faculty.

 

The course will be presented in a blended format (online and face-to-face)

The practical course is held at the UCT Faculty of Health Sciences campus. Students must have completed all the online course content before attending the practical sessions and must be present for the entire face-to-face component to be eligible to pass the course.
