The widely acclaimed Child Support Grant has been successful in reaching large numbers of poor children. Its greatest weakness is that the value of the grant is too low to protect children from hunger, malnutrition and stunting. The review, conducted by the Children’s Institute for the National Department of Social Development, provides new insight into the dynamics of child poverty and the need for augmented social assistance, albeit in a time of austerity budgeting.
The authors will give a brief overview of the CSG and its impact on child poverty spanning the pre- and post-lockdown period. They will discuss emerging challenges, including backlogs in birth registration and grant access, and will present modelled scenarios for increasing the CSG to achieve poverty reduction as envisaged in the National Development Plan and SDGs.
