In Memoriam - Dan Stein
08 Dec 2025

Dear Staff and Student Colleagues

Prof. Dan Stein, an extraordinary psychiatrist, scientist, and leader whose influence has shaped mental health care, has died this weekend. I join communities of health care professionals and scholars of multiple disciplines across the country, continent and the world. In recognising this as a moment of deep sorrow coupled with an immense celebration of a colossal and inspirational legacy.

Dan's work has been critical in global discourse in a range of areas across Psychiatry, Mental Health and beyond.

I reflect on my engagements with Dan. Dan represented, for me, a place of safety at UCT where debate was often robust. I note his profound mindfulness and compassionate commitment to creating inclusive and respectful spaces, even when navigating difficult or contentious issues.

Dan’s openness, transparency, and principled approach to leadership were hallmarks of his character, and they earned him the admiration and trust of colleagues across disciplines.

At this time we stand in solidarity alongside Heather (a deeply valued member of our Faculty) as well as Gabriella, Josh, and Sarah, who is currently a student with us. We hold all of you in our thoughts during this period. Dan often shared wonderful stories about being a grandparent, always with a sense of joy and quiet pride. We wish you strength, comfort, and the company of companions who love you, as you navigate the days ahead.

Long life to the Stein family.

Lala ngoxolo, ntathe Dan.

We will honour his memory through the care, integrity, and humanity we uphold each day. More formal communication will follow during the course of the week.
