Head of Division: Physiotheraphy

After obtaining her MSc in Physiotherapy in 2007, Dr Manie joined the University of Cape Town in August as the sole lecturer for the cardio-pulmonary modules across the undergraduate programme. In 2015, she was the first recipient from Physiotherapy of the Bongani Mayosi National Health Scholarship. Shamila has served on several departmental and faculty committees since 2008 including the Timetable and Venue Planning Committee, Departmental Undergraduate Education Committee, Recruitment Committee DHRS, Transformation Committee and the Decolonising the Curriculum Steering Committee.  

In 2018, Shamila was promoted to Senior Lecturer and in 2020, she was elected as Senate Senior Lecturer representative. She completed her PhD in July 2022 with a primary focus on providing pulmonary rehabilitation as a continuum of care for people with tuberculosis (TB) to improve their functional capacity, lung function and overall quality of life. Shamila’s research interests centre on pulmonary rehabilitation for people with TB and in the field of cardiothoracic surgery and ICU.  
During her time as the undergraduate programme convener in the Division of Rehabilitation Sciences, Shamila initiated changes to streamline procedures and processes. These included setting up the annual re-orientation programme for all returning Physiotherapy students in 2020, which was aimed at collective engagement with students about various topics around communication, accountability and professional behaviour. Inspirational speakers at this event have included Springbok physiotherapist, Rene Naylor, and most recently, Dr Imitiaaz Sooliman, Founder of non-profit organisation, Gift of the Givers.
