Student Scam Alert

Dear students and staff
We are concerned about reports of scams targeting our students as they enter the new academic year. Recent incidences include fake student accommodation offers and appointments in the library, which have required students to deposit money into accounts to secure their places.
We deplore such acts, above all against our students, who are financially vulnerable, many from out of town with no family support system.
Please be mindful of attempts to secure financial commitment from you for jobs or accommodation. Do not pay any money to persons offering you jobs or accommodation without verifying that the offer is genuine. The private accommodation office on campus can assist you with verifying the authenticity of accommodation offers. For job offers for students, please check with the department where the job is being offered. Genuine job offers will not request an upfront payment for anything before your start the work.
If you are uncertain, or suspect someone is at risk, please do not hesitate to contact our campus security services at 021 650 2222/3, Student Services or staff to assist you.
Please take care of yourselves.
Regards
