Clarification on face-to-face classes and examination dates in the Faculty of Health Sciences

The message from the Vice-Chancellor yesterday stated that ‘All undergraduate face-to-face classes are suspended’ from 17 October 2016 and that all examinations will occur between 7 November 2016 to 25 November 2016 for all Faculties in the university. These arrangements will clearly not facilitate the academic project in our Faculty for two reasons: (1) teaching and learning in the Faculty of Health Sciences requires contact between lecturers and students, and (2) the academic year is longer than that of other Faculties.

On Friday 14 October 2016, the Vice-Chancellor advised that…’Teaching and learning will resume through a variety of approaches, including blended learning. The precise combination will vary by faculty and discipline and will be communicated to students by their faculties and departments shortly.’ This approach allows the Faculty of Health Sciences to customise the teaching and learning programme and examination dates according to its needs. Therefore, face-to-face interactions will be used in our teaching programmes and the examination period will last until the second week of December where necessary.

Yours sincerely
Bongani Mayosi
Dean
