Physiotherapy students take Oath in preparation for clinical practice
Second year physiotherapy students taking their oath
In preparation for entry into clinical practice, our second year physiotherapy students recently took the next step to advancing their training during the annual Oath Taking ceremony. Following on their first year of intensive learning, they formally pledged their commitment to upholding the strictest standards of professionalism during their service.
Following the ceremony, students will now be able to manage clients in a clinical setting making use of the interviewing, assessment and treatment planning skills gained in first year. In a moving talk, guest speaker Dr Theresa Burgess encouraged willingness and tenacity to practice in order that students deliver the best service to their patients. She spoke candidly, saying that things could go wrong, but emphasised that good clinicians are humble enough to recognise and admit their mistakes and also, have the confidence to develop a new plan of action.
Before leading the oath, Interim Dean Professor Gregory Hussey said students should “live what is stated in the oath and uphold the principles embodied in the document.” Prof Hussey then led the impeccably dressed students in their oath after which they signed the document to further embolden their commitment. Prior to taking the oath the students were made aware of their roles as agents of change and their responsibility in promoting health literacy. Now that they have an opportunity to put this knowledge into practice, the Faculty wishes them well in their journey to becoming health professionals fit for purpose.
