Leading researchers recognised for remarkable efforts in medical research

Four FHS academics were honoured for their remarkable contribution to science at the recent South African Medical Research Council (SAMRC) Scientific Merit Awards in Cape Town. The prestigious annual event pays tribute to some of the country’s leading medical researchers whose work has had a monumental impact on health science in South Africa.

One of the two Platinum Awards for a lifetime of exemplary scientific achievement was presented to Professor Dan Stein for inspiring scientific research that has made an outstanding contribution to the health of people living in developing countries.

Renowned Professors Gary Maartens and Robert Wilkinson received Gold Awards for their exceptional work, which have had major scientific breakthroughs in health research.

A Silver Medal, awarded for major scientific contribution to research in health, was conferred to Dr Jonathan Peter.

“It is imperative that we recognise research focused on advancing the state of health in our country and that contributes to the global knowledge economy,” said SAMRC President Professor Glenda Gray.
