The Lancet, one of the world leading medical journals, publishes a paper outlining the most recent advances in tuberculosis pathogenesis and management every 5 years.  

In the latest of these, published online on 15 September 2015, three leading UCT academics in this field - Prof Keertan Dheda, Prof Gary Maartens and Clifton Barry III – discuss the changes in our recent thinking about sleeping versus active TB, outline the recent advances in diagnosis including PCR and urine-based testing (compared to the old standard of looking for bugs under the microscope),  discuss the use of new drugs such as Bedaquiline and Delamanid, outline thinking about how TB can best be prevented, and provide a summary of the latest global trends in the burden of TB.
