10 October 2013, Cape Town, South Africa - Today South Africa celebrates World Mental Health Day, in the wake of the adoption of a new National Mental Health Policy Framework and Action Plan by the Department of Health.

The policy and plan are the result of a broad and participatory policy making process which included more than 4000 participants from all provinces of the country.The completion of South Africa's National Mental Health Policy comes shortly after all 194 WHO member states, including South Africa, approved a global mental health action plan at the 66th World Health Assembly at the end of May.
