This one day training in Essential Steps in Managing Obstetric Emergencies (ESMOE) for Midwives, aims to address that critical skills shortage in an effort to improve maternal and newborn outcomes.

This course was designed and will be presented by the Division of Nursing and Midwifery at UCT, in collaboration and consultation with Dr Jason Marcus in the UCT Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

Entry requirements: Registered with the South African Nursing Council as a General Nurse AND Midwife

Course content:

  • Respectful Maternity Care
  • Management of Obstetric Haemorrhage
  • Management of Shoulder Dystocia; Vaginal breech and cord prolapse and Assisted Delivery
  • Initial management of severe preeclampsia/eclampsia
