On the 26th of March 2020 the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak resulted in President Cyril Ramaphosa declaring a country-wide lockdown. In response to the national crisis the Faculty’s scientists collaborated with UCT colleagues, and together with local and international partner institutions, developed and conducted research in response to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This necessary pivot brought together the Faculty’s expertise in basic, clinical and population health sciences as well as innovation. Researchers conducted a myriad of work which propelled insights into SARS-CoV-2, including:
