Cape Heart Centre to commemorate the first heart transplant on 3 December 2010

Their main partners for this event are the UCT Private Academic Hospital, Groote Schuur Hospital, the Heart of Cape Town Museum and the South African Heart and Stroke Foundation. Visitors can also expect to learn more from organizations such as PACE (Prevent Arrhythmic Cardiac Events), the Sports Science Institute and the Organ Donor Foundation.

Educational lectures, aimed at the layman as well as the expert, will be presented by well-known academics such as professors Lionel Opie and Tim Noakes, among others, and topics range from how to look after your heart, to heart surgery and all it entails.

Professor Karen Sliwa, Director of the Hatter Cardiovascular Research Institute, said: "This is a wonderful opportunity for members of the public to learn more about some of the pivotal research that takes place in the Faculty of Health Sciences, and is a rare chance to go 'behind the scenes' in our laboratories."

There are informative and educational tours of the cardiovascular laboratories, and both Groote Schuur and the UCT Private Academic Hospital.

Health screening, talks and laboratory tours take place in the Chris Barnard Building, Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Cape Town, Anzio Road, Observatory. All tours convene in the Heart of Cape Town Museum, Groote Schuur Hospital Old Main Building, and the Museum also hosts health screening opportunities.

You will also have the opportunity to visit the Heart of Cape Town Museum, commemorating the first heart transplant, for the special entrance fee of R25, only for 3 December!

Limited parking will be available at the Faculty, and an regular shuttle service will be in operation between the Faculty of Health Sciences and the Heart of Cape Town Museum.
