The Division of Nuclear Medicine at the University of Cape Town is a centre committed to excellent patient care with the aims of expanding the field through specialist training and research.
Our adult nuclear medicine department is based at Groote Schuur Hospital, Observatory. Our paediatric nuclear medicine department is based at the Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Rondebosch.
Both the units offer the following services:
- Diagnostic nuclear medicine imaging including SPECT/CT and PET/CT studies.
- Osteodensitometry
- Therapy: 131I for benign and malignant thyroid disease, peptide receptor radionuclide therapy (PRRT) for neuroendocrine tumours, peptide receptor ligand therapy (PRLT) for prostate cancer, radiosynoviorthesis and bone pain palliation.
- In vitro studies; Glomerular filtration rate measurement, blood volumes measurements and congenital hypothyroidism screening tests
The Nuclear Medicine service is available 24 hours a day to all referral centres
