This applied short course builds on the Fundamentals of Behaviour Change programme and focuses on how behavioural science principles can be applied to health systems and community health practice.

Participants will learn how and why people make health-related decisions, and how to design
interventions, services, and communication strategies that promote adherence, prevention,
and trust, while respecting autonomy and context.

The course recognizes the realities of South Africa’s diverse health system, including public-private
divides, workforce challenges, and social determinants of health.

Who Should Attend
Healthcare professionals working in public health, community health, and health promotion; Clinical practice and patient engagement; Health communication and SBCC programmes; Policy, programme design, and NGO-led health initiatives

Entry requirements: Completion of Fundamentals of Behaviour Change Course (or equivalent foundational knowledge) is required.

Course Content

  1. Understanding Behaviour in Health Contexts
  2. Diagnosing Barriers to Health Behaviour Change
  3. Designing for Behaviour Change in Health Systems
  4. Building Empathy and Trust in Health Engagement
  5. Application and Reflection

The course will consist of short presentations, local health case studies, group exercises, reflection, and peer learning.

Assessment: There is no formal assessment. 

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Analyse health behaviour challenges using Transtheoretical Model, COM-B, and the Social
    Ecological Model.
  • Identify psychological, social, and environmental barriers to positive health behaviour.
  • Apply EAST principles to design interventions and communication for improved uptake and
    adherence.
  • Use empathy and contextual understanding to promote trust and patient-centred care.
  • Reflect critically on ethical practice in behavioural design and its role in reducing inequality and
    stigma.

A digital certificate of attendance will be issued to participants of the course. Participants will receive a 'Certificate of Attendance' from the University of Cape Town's Continuing Education Unit (CEU) upon full participation. 

A verifiable 'Behaviour Change in Healthcare Settings' digital badge is also included, making it easy to display your achievement on LinkedIn or other professional platforms.
