Entry Requirements:  Registered Nurses (Professional and Enrolled). You must be currently working in a children's ward, or in an adult setting in which, at times, you are responsible for nursing children.

The aim of this course is to equip nurses, who work regularly or occasionally with sick children, with essential knowledge and skills to confidently provide the most appropriate nursing care to sick children and their families.

The course is run by the Harry Crossley Children’s Nursing Development Unit in the Department of Paediatrics at the University of Cape Town. The anticipated outcome of the course is that nurses will have gained an insight into the fundamental practice of nursing sick children.

Course Content:

1. An understanding of anatomical, physiological and developmental differences across the age-span of a child, and how this impacts the response to illness and the required nature of care.
2. An ability to provide safe, quality, evidence based nursing care to sick children, using the Regul8 Framework as a guide.
3. A recognition of the important supportive role of the principle caregiver and the ability to provide care for both the child and the family unit.
4. An understanding of their role in the work of ensuring the best possible hospital outcomes through an awareness of child health in the region.

A digital certificate of participation will be issued to participants who have completed and submitted all learning activities and assignments to an adequate standard.
