The Fundamental Emergency Care short course revises some of the important fundamental topics and principles required for anyone working in emergency centres or even dealing with occasional emergency presentations. The course gives a structured approach to emergencies, with a focus on resuscitation in the first hours, practical skills and teamwork.

Emergency conditions and skills gained during the hands-on workshops will be incorporated into patient simulations and scenario-based teaching, including leading and working within a resuscitation team.

Assessment: A multiple-choice entry exam is held at the start of the course. The course manual/course material for the exam will be couriered to registered participants after the registration closing date. The manual is a comprehensive theoretical guide to emergency care, with the emphasis on resuscitation, and chapters covering many of the common emergency conditions in South Africa.

Who should attend?

The course is aimed at doctors, nursing sisters and paramedics involved in providing emergency care to patients.

Entry requirements: Medical officers (working in emergency centres); paramedics (BTech or ALS); nursing sisters (working in emergency centres). 

The course is open to qualified medical doctors, registered nursing sisters and ECP qualified paramedics. Other qualifications with suitable experience may be considered but preference will be to above.

  • Cardiac arrest algorithms (2015)
  • Advanced airway management (intubation, rapid sequence intubation and the difficult airway)
  • Surgical airway (cricothyroidoyomy - needle and surgical)
  • Ventilation
  • Paediatric Resuscitation (Intra-osseous insertion and fluid management)
  • ECD recognition
  • Tachy-arrhythmia's and cardioversion
  • Brady-arrhythmia's and pacing
  • Intercostal drain insertion
  • Venous access
  • Triage and disaster planning

A Certificate of Completion and CPD points will be issued to participants on successful completion of the course.
