Are you considering doing a PhD?

This is a 12 week fully online course facilitated by the Children’s Nursing Development Unit (CNDU), in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at the University of Cape Town.

The aim of the course is to help students bridge the gap between a Masters' degree and a PhD, if the Masters' degree was a clinical or professional degree with less focus on independent research and academic writing skills. The outcome of this course is that students will have a very clear idea of what the PhD journey looks like as well as have the basic skills to tackle a PhD.

The course consists of 4 modules:

  • Academic reading and writing skills with GenAI in mind;
  • Considering PhD support;
  • Technical tools and skills- advanced word processing, electronic searches, file storage, presentation and review;
  • Thesis structure.

Each week provides structured self-paced activities that promote reflection and learning, without requiring real-time interaction with instructors or peers. Weekly assignments, enabling us to offer you directed, individualised guidance.

digital certificate of completion will be issued to participants on successful completion of the course.

The application deadline has been extended to: Friday 4 July 2025
