Mr Bongisa Shumane

My research interests are concerned with issues of forensic mental health service-users as a misunderstood and marginalised group, community integration of marginalised groups and the value and significance of work for marginalised groups in society. My Master’s study explored forensic mental health care users’ experience of occupational engagement during their forensic leave of absence in the Eastern Cape, South Africa. Key findings were firstly, the importance of establishing self-reliance towards improving their overall recovery, and secondly, that forensic mental health care users’ families play a pivotal role in facilitating community engagement, and enabling the exploration of diverse opportunities.
