My area of practice and research is in Work Practice (WP). I am particularly interested in the inclusion of vulnerable groups in work, beyond disability and how we can expand the WP curriculum within occupational therapy to ensure early exposure to the module. My research interests extend to the training of occupational therapists and how this can be improved through supported education. Further to this, I am interested in developing research that investigates how we can better prepare occupational therapists to be ‘workers’ in the South African context, and equip them to recognize and take up opportunities, and better manage the challenges they experience in practice. I believe occupational therapists can contribute to multiple sectors through work-readiness and work training and that we should advocate for the profession across community-based structures and institutions.

My PhD investigated how persons with disabilities use education and training opportunities to advance their social capital in the South African context, through being economically empowered. A key learning was the importance of understanding the motivation to work, especially for people who have acquired a disability and how disability identity impacts this.  Lastly, I am interested in research concerned with approaches and methods to improve clinical education and practice learning. I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate students across a range of topics with a focus on disability inclusion within work, the school to work transition, and curriculum development within WP.
