Assoc Prof Sheila Clow
I am a registered midwife and nurse who has lived and worked as a nurse and midwife in rural and urban settings in South Africa, the UK and Australia. I have a PhD in Maternal and Child Health and is committed to improving the wellbeing of women and their newborn infants. An associate professor in the Division of Nursing & Midwifery at the University of Cape Town where I am responsible for postgraduate Midwifery programmes.
Co-led a team which established an Active Birth Unit at Mowbray in 2001. This aimed to provide a setting for innovation and excellence in practice, education and research in Midwifery. I have served on the national intrapartum guidelines and provincial maternity guidelines committees. She participated in the international harmonised Reproductive Health Registries (hRHR) research project.
Served in national and provincial leadership for Midwifery (SOMSA) and Nursing (DENOSA) and was responsible for co-ordinating the submission on behalf of Nursing to the Truth & Reconciliation Commission.
Internationally – Chaired the International Confederation of Midwives (ICM) Scientific & Professional Programme committee 2011; served on the ICM international advisory group on out-of-hospital births, and the international Midwifery Services Framework committee as well as on the International Council of Nurses (ICN) task team to revise the International Code of Nursing Ethics. An editorial board member for the African Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health.
