Ms Nomusa Ntinga

Lecturer and First Year Convenor

My teaching is predominantly in paediatrics. I have a special interest in qualitative, critical and indigenous research methodologies and ideologies. My master’s study was within cardiopulmonary physiotherapy and focused on intra-professional perceptions of physiotherapists in the adult intensive care unit. This study was imperative towards determining other professional perspectives towards improving working relations in the acute setting, so that the client receives the best service available.  A key finding was the need for a match between culture(s) of practice and physiotherapy services that are pro-mobilization and the need for advocacy and training, using evidence-based practice to improve working relations.

I am currently a PhD candidate investigating physiotherapy identity formation from the black indigenous experience. I think this is a much-needed line of inquiry across African contexts and would like to supervise projects with that focus. I have noticed that physiotherapy education and training fosters a western professional identity, that at times reflects contradictory values to indigenous value systems. I am interested in what this means for the experience of black physiotherapy students and how they navigate this.
