Clinical Educator

My areas of interest lie within adult strokes, particularly knowledge of stroke risk factors and knowledge of health-promoting lifestyles and recovery, and how these play into stroke reoccurrence. I am passionate about neurology, and I enjoy seeing neuroplasticity in action and I hope to contribute to further research in this area.

My masters research was part of a larger study and investigated the assessment of health promoting lifestyle knowledge, stroke related risk factors, and quality of life of stroke survivors in the Mofolo, Chiawelo, and Stretford communities of Gauteng, South Africa. A key findings was the importance of managing co-morbidities such as hypertension in order to reduce the risk of stroke recurrence. It was interesting to discover that many participants had sound knowledge about signs and symptoms of strokes but hesitated to access emergency health services, indicating the need for further research regarding how access to emergency and health services may influence behaviour this behaviour.
