Introduction
I believe that people with disabilities should be able to fully participate in the curriculum, and it is important that we as educators explore alternative ways to ensure this in ways that go beyond access to full participation with achievement as the end goal.
My research interests are concerned with disability inclusion and equitable access to the curriculum. My Masters’ study investigated the ways disability is included in curriculum and I found that this was not adequately/sufficiently addressed. I am passionate about centering disability in curriculum development as this holds potential to include a wide range of diversities that may experience both personal and contextual constraints to learning, especially as this relates to digital and online accessibility.
I am also deeply interested in understanding student with disability’s specific learning needs and approaches. My PhD study explored staff and student’s understanding of equitable access to the curriculum. A key finding was the need to further investigate the idea of ‘equitable access’ and the need for institutional support towards meaningful inclusion. I believe considering disability as a way of life is the first step towards shifting limiting perspectives that continue to disempower people with disabilities in education.
