Dr Candice Hendricks-De Kock

Senior Lecturer and 2nd year convener
My teaching lies within the movement science cluster, more specifically, acute and traumatic orthopedic conditions. I believe knowledge is power and an effective strategy towards helping our clients better navigate their health journeys. I am passionate about clinical research especially in low-income/resourced areas. My masters’ study investigated the risk factors associated with running injuries, with the intention to develop preventative treatment programmes for runners. My PhD is focused on treatment strategies and interventions for women with osteoarthritis. I wanted to identify strategies to equip clients to become self-managers of their own conditions, thereby improving their quality of life, while minimally relying on an already overburdened system. A key finding was the need for evidence-based management strategies towards managing clients and discharge them effectively. I supervise students interested in exercise and physical activity studies including running, golf, rugby etc. I am involved in the Western Cape on Wellness (WOW) initiative that mobilizing communities for health and identifies and supports champions to respond to community health challenges through group exercise interventions.
