Dr Shamila Manie
My research interests are varied but lie predominantly within the rehabilitation of patients with any respiratory condition. I specialize in the area of cardio thoracic surgery and management of respiratory conditions, and I have contributed to research in ICU and TB, as these are also my practice areas, and areas of student research supervision. Another area that I have recently become more interested and involved in, is physiotherapy education, especially understanding how our students learn and how this can inform and improve teaching. Further interests include decolonizing the curriculum and the impact of COVID-19 on respiratory physiotherapy.
My PhD investigated the assessment of lung-function abnormalities in adult patients with TB in a high HIV-prevalent setting, and the impact of a pulmonary rehabilitation intervention to improve lung function, functional capacity, and quality of life. A key finding was the lack of knowledge and understanding about TB, despite its prevalence, and the power of pulmonary rehabilitation programmes to improve quality of life and the categorization of lung disease.
