Introduction

My area of practice and research is Work Related Practice (WRP) within occupational therapy. I focus on advancing the inclusion of vulnerable groups in work, beyond a sole emphasis on disability, and on strengthening the WRP curriculum to ensure earlier and more meaningful student engagement. I have a particular interest in role-emerging practice, and in developing approaches that prepare occupational therapy graduates to function effectively as “workers” within the South African context, including recognising opportunities, establishing new areas of practice, and navigating complex professional environments. 

I am committed to strengthening the contribution of occupational therapy across sectors, particularly in relation to work-readiness and vocational training, and to advocating for the profession within both community-based and institutional contexts.

My PhD examined how persons with disabilities in South Africa utilise education and training opportunities to build social capital and advance economic participation. A key finding highlighted the importance of understanding the motivation to work, especially among individuals with acquired disabilities and the influence of disability identity on this process.

I also maintain a strong interest in advancing clinical education and practice-based learning. I supervise undergraduate and postgraduate research across areas including disability inclusion in work contexts, school-to-work transitions, role-emerging practice, and the development of the WRP curriculum.
