Established in 1912, the Faculty hosts the oldest medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, and the top-rated faculty of health sciences on the African continent. The Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) is a large clinical and academic department which plays a leading role in medical education and research, and provides clinical services to the population of the Western Cape and, in the case of our highly specialised services, to patients throughout Southern Africa.

Postgraduate Observers
Thank you for your interest in the Department of Anaesthesia and Perioperative Medicine. This programme gives qualified healthcare professionals the opportunity to observe the clinical Anaesthesia environment, which includes multidisciplinary team meetings, surgical procedures, and academic teaching sessions. In line with South African regulations, observers do not participate in direct patient care or decision-making.
To continue with your application, please email the following documentation, ensure that certified copies are provided where indicated. Please include your requested dates for the observership.
- Letter of support from your home institution or two referee contact details and a certificate of good standing from your local medical registration authority
- Updated CV
- Certified copy of your medical qualification
- Certified proof of registration with your country's medical/regulatory body
- Certified copy of your passport (or national ID)
Once your application has been reviewed and approved the following will be sent to you:
- A formal invitation/acceptance letter
- An honorary voluntary contract
- An observership agreement (includes indemnity, code of conduct, and confirmed dates)
- A visa support letter (if required)
To finalise your placement, please return the following:
- Signed honorary voluntary contract
- Signed observership agreement
- Proof of travel medical insurance valid for the full duration of your observership
