Founded in 1956 as a tribute to the brave soldiers who died in the Second World War, our hospital has grown into a premier tertiary paediatric centre serving children across South Africa and referrals from other African nations. Over the decades, our commitment to innovation, compassionate care, and specialized treatment has established us as a leader in paediatric medicine.

- Advanced Paediatric Anaesthesia:
Our busy division performs approximately 10,000 anaesthetics annually. We provide cutting-edge training in paediatric anaesthesia across specialties such as cardiothoracics, liver transplantation, burns, neurosurgery, general surgery, orthopaedics, ophthalmology, ENT, urology, plastics, and paediatric sedation. Our department also extends training opportunities to supernumerary fellows both from South Africa and internationally. - State-of-the-Art Facilities:
The hospital boasts eight fully-equipped main operating theatres, complete with a dedicated day surgery theatre and a trauma theatre. We complement our surgical services with specialized departments in radiology, cardiology, radiotherapy, and chronic pain management. Elective paediatric orthopaedic procedures have relocated from Maitland Cottage Hospital, awaiting a new Orthopaedic centre currently under construction. - Expert Team of Specialists:
Our dedicated team includes six permanent paediatric anaesthetists supported by up to three rotating consultants and six registrars from the University of Cape Town’s Department of Anaesthesia. Our department is proud to be one of only two MEPA Centres in Africa, where we host regular simulation-based training workshops in paediatric anaesthesia to elevate standards of care.
