The Division of Epidemiology and Biostatistics recently partnered with the City of Cape Town libraries as part of National Science Week (4-9 August 2025). The Division hosted high school learners in Grades 8-10 for separate sessions held at the Gugulethu Library and the Cape Town Central Library to provide an introduction to Epidemiology and Biostatistics. Each of these 90-minute interactive sessions was attended by more than 50 learners, and provided a small but valuable outreach to begin to orient young people to public health.

The team introduced students to the role of an epidemiologist, using fun and educational activities to bring the science to life. One game demonstrated the principles of contact tracing, while another focused on building quantitative literacy —both designed to spark curiosity and critical thinking. The sessions were lively and informative, with enthusiastic participation from learners. The events highlighted the power of learning through play and the importance of inspiring the next generation of public health professionals.
