Universal Health Coverage (UHC) is critical in the pursuit of equitable and sustainable health systems, and is recognized as a key target within the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. The Postgraduate Diploma in Health Economics aims to enable the development of some of the most important health economics capacities needed to support the movement towards Universal Health Coverage, with a specific focus on South Africa and similar contexts. Key content areas include economic evaluation, health technology assessment and strategic purchasing, amongst others.
This mixed mode diploma runs from February to November during each year and can be completed within a minimum (maximum) of two (four) years.
During Year 1, 4 online modules are offered (1. introduction to health economics; 2. the economics of health systems; 3. priority setting and health care decision making; & 4. key features of economic evaluation) together with a 2 week contact block that focuses on economic evaluation.
During Year 2, online modules include: 1. economic evaluation for health care decision making; 2. strategic purchasing; 3. strategic purchasing – influencing providers & 4. strengthening progress to universal coverage. The 2 week contact block focuses on strategic purchasing.
The diploma is designed for graduates in economics, social or health sciences, and is aimed primarily at full time employees of national, provincial or local government (Departments of Health and Finance), health insurance schemes, the pharmaceutical industry and international organisations. The minimum entry requirement is an undergraduate degree in economics, health sciences, social sciences, or equivalent, from an approved university. Because we receive many more applications than we can accommodate, spaces are allocated on a competitive basis, including consideration of degree(s), marks achieved, and work experience.

- Academic transcripts for previous degree(s), which should indicate what courses you have completed and the mark achieved for each course.
The postgraduate office of the Faculty of Health Sciences will notify applicants of the outcome of their application within 6 weeks of the closing date.
