Prof Leslie London bids Farewell after more than three decades of Transformative Public Health Leadership

On Tuesday 9 December 2025, the Division of Public Health Medicine at UCT hosted a heartfelt Farewell Lecture for Professor Leslie London, marking the close of an extraordinary career spanning more than three decades of service to the university and the broader public health community. Prof London retires at the end of 2025 from his position as Chair in Public Health Medicine, leaving behind a legacy of scholarship, advocacy, and mentorship.

The evening’s programme reflected the depth of his impact. Associate Professor Nisha Jacob served as host, while Professor Susan Cleary, Head of the School of Public Health, opened the event by welcoming colleagues, students, and friends to celebrate this milestone.

Tributes flowed from distinguished speakers who have worked alongside Prof London in advancing health equity and social justice. A/Prof Tracey Naledi (Deputy Dean for Social Accountability and Health Systems), Colette Solomon (Director of Women on Farms Project), and Fatima Hassan (Director of Health Justice Initiative) shared personal reflections and professional insights into his unwavering commitment to human rights and ethical practice in health care. Their remarks highlighted his role as a thought leader and advocate for vulnerable communities. Dominique Adams rendered a beautiful musical tribute to Prof London. 

The event concluded with Professor Lionel Green-Thompson, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, offering closing reflections on Prof London’s enduring influence on public health education and policy. Siwe Toto delivered a warm vote of thanks, capturing the collective gratitude of all present. A beautiful photo montage of Prof London’s career was shared while guests shared memories and humourous anecdotes over refreshments. 

Prof London’s Farewell Lecture was not only a celebration of his remarkable contributions but also a reminder of the values he championed—integrity, equity, and the pursuit of health for all. His work will continue to inspire generations of public health professionals.
