New Release: Communicating and Comprehending Chemical Hazards and Risks: Challenges and Opportunities in Low- and Middle-Income Countries
From the Division of Environmental Health at the University of Cape Town
Communicating the health and environmental risks associated with chemicals is crucial for the sound management of chemicals and waste (SMCW), protecting human health and the environment, and promoting risk prevention and reduction. Yet in many low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), regular and consistent chemical risk communication is rarely planned for or sustainably financed.
This factsheet outlines the key challenges faced by government agencies in LMICs, including:
-
A lack of dedicated financial resources
-
Limited capacity and staff trained in risk communication
-
The difficulty of closing the knowledge gap between experts and the public
It provides guidance for regulators and decision-makers on implementing and financing communication strategies that:
-
Prevent emergencies
-
Manage crises
-
Reduce poisonings and chronic health effects
-
Promote transparency and regular engagement with at-risk populations
