Paediatric Service
New Somerset Hospital is a 330-bed general hospital that drains the Western sub-district of the Cape Metropolitan district. It is also the Level 2 hospital for the Saldanha sub-district of the West Coast district (District Hospital – Vredenburg Hospital). The paediatric services provide Level 2 services for a under 13 childhood population of approximately 100000 in these areas.
As part of a UCT-affiliated hospital, the paediatric department undertakes both undergraduate teaching (4th, 5th and 6th years) and postgraduate teaching (4 paediatric registrars).
In-patient Services
General Paediatrics: Barkly and Ebden wards: 32 beds in total
Level 2 Neonatalogy with NICU and High Care Wards and Kangaroo Mother Care beds: 42 beds in total
Paediatric Surgery: General and ENT, 2 lists a week (Ebden Ward)
Out-patient Services
General Paediatric Outpatients twice a week
Paediatric HIV and Infectious Diseases twice a week
Neonatal High Risk Clinic twice a month
Sickle Cell Disease clinic once a month’
