The Harry Crossley Children's Nursing Development Unit (CNDU) is a nurse-led teaching and scholarship unit in the Department of Paediatrics and Child Health at The University of Cape Town, situated at the Red Cross War Memorial Children's Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa. We work with interdisciplinary colleagues from both academic and clinical settings to strengthen the practice of children's nursing across Sub-Saharan Africa.

We exist to Build Children's Nursing in Africa, for Africa. As a team we are committed to unapologetic African nursing excellence.

Our work is divided into the following 3 different focus areas:

1. Teaching and Training for Children's Nurses

We are dedicated to advancing the knowledge, skills, and confidence of nurses across Africa, empowering them to provide excellent care for children. Through comprehensive teaching and training programs, we are committed to nurturing the professional growth of every nurse we work with, ensuring they are equipped to meet the unique needs of their youngest patients.

2. Supporting Educators and Institutions

We believe in the power of partnership and support to advance nursing education. By collaborating with educators and institutions, we support the development of sustainable, contextually appropriate, and high-quality training programs. Our goal is to not only improve nursing knowledge but also to enhance the educational infrastructure that can grow the child health workforce.

3.  Developing Children's Nursing Leaders and Services

Our work goes beyond training; we are committed to developing nurses’ leadership to deliver high-quality, contextually appropriate care for children. By designing and sharing innovative tools and solutions for Africa’s healthcare environments, we enable nurses to draw on their strengths, foster critical thinking, and practice evidence-based healthcare. Our commitment to walking the journey with our students and partners reflects our dedication to their success and the well-being of children they care for.
