Clinical services
Clinical services, consultation,education, training and research are core activities. The clinical services of the Division of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry are based at Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital, Klipfontein Road and 46 Sawkins Road, Rondebosch. Referrals are made by health professionals, educational and clinical psychologists, and social workers
Teaching
Education and training is provided to undergraduate and post graduate medical students, doctors specialising in psychiatry, and psychiatrists specialising in child and adolescent psychiatry. Teaching is also offered to Nurses and social workers doing postgraduate course work.

Research
Research is conducted across aspects of child & adolescent mental health by a range of professionals. The Adolescent Health Research Unit (AHRU) focuses on health education and mental health concerns in adolescents, and is directed by Prof de Vries, and co-directed by Ass/Prof Cathy Mathews. We are also in the process of setting up an interdisciplinary research centre for Autism Research in Africa.

Outpatient services
The Outpatient Unit provide assessments and treatment of children aged 3 – 18 years and their families. Children with a range of severe emotional and behavioural problems suggestive of significant psychiatric disorders are seen. The clinics run on weekdays Monday to Friday from 8am to 5pm.

The Neuropsychiatry Clinic sees children and adolescents with complex neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD, Autism, Tics and OCD. It also sees children with psychiatric disorders associated with HIV, TBI and Epilepsy. The clinic is based at RCWMCH on Wednesdays from 8 to 12 noon as well as on weekdays at 46 Sawkins Road, Rondebosch from 8 to 5pm.

The Parent-infant Mental Health Service provides services to infants under the age of three years and their parents. Parents and infants are seen at two main sites: DCAP, 46 Sawkins Road, Rondebosch and Khuyasa Clinic, Khayelitsha.

This service offers psychiatric input to in patients who have mental health problems. Consultation, assessment and treatment are provided for children with a range of needs.

- The Outreach Unit helps to make services accessible to communities. Activities include education, training, clinical work, clinical guidance and supervision, liaison and facilitation of support groups. Inpatient service: (under 13 years)
The Therapeutic Learning Centre assesses and treats children between ages 6 to 12 years of age who require in patient assessment and treatment for major psychiatric disorders. Children attend as day or in patients.

Children attend as day- or in-patients. Parents are involved in treatment. Outreach activities include workshops at children's homes and schools on managing difficult behaviour. Tel. - The Training Unit offers courses to nursing students, nurses working at primary and tertiary level care and M Soc Sc (Clinical Social Work) students.
