Can I ask that you send this to your academic staff who may be interested in collaborating with us in a forensic science / pathology project for our Masters students; or interested in co-supervising such a project. As you know there are forensic aspects to all disciplines, for example, procedure related deaths (Section 56 of the Health Professions Amendment Act), trauma deaths, maternal mortality, child deaths, molecular autopsies, post mortem imaging / virtopsy, OP poisoning, etc.

For MPhil: Biomedical Forensic Science minor dissertations 2018

The MPhil Biomedical Forensic Science students are required to complete a minor dissertation (60 credits) as part of their degree.

We invite you to submit a brief (1 page) project proposal for a Masters student to possibly carry out as their research project.

Projects take place in their last year of study, typically between April and August (2018).

Full project proposals are written up by the student towards the end of the year that precedes the project (2017), with guidance from the Forensic Medicine & Toxicology staff and their supervisors. This is submitted to the Departmental Research Committee and relevant ethics committee(s) between January – March (2018), while students complete their final theory course (February – March 2018).

The project proposals you submit now will be chosen by students in June 2017 and, if your proposal is chosen, the research will be carried out in 2018.

The staff members within the Division Forensic Medicine and Toxicology are open to collaboration, should you wish to offer a multi-disciplinary type of project.

If you do not have an idea for a project but would like to supervise or co-supervise a project, please also let us know. We would be happy to brainstorm ideas with you or link you to an existing project in line with your area of expertise.

We would be grateful for the support from the Department of Pathology and beyond to help to supervise these eager students.

• Project proposals need not exceed 1 page and can follow this format:
• Title
• Supervisor(s) (names and contact details)
• Keywords
• Background (~ 1 paragraph)
• Aims and objectives
• Brief methods
• One or two references
