Groote Schuur Hospital is one of Cape Town's premier tertiary academic hospitals and was officially opened in 1938. The hospital is internationally renowned as the training ground for some of South Africa's best doctors, surgeons and nurses. Its mission as an academic health centre, Groote Schuur Hospital will strive to provide outstanding tertiary and quaternary care for patients of the Western Cape and beyond. Groote Schuur Hospital is in collaboration with the University of Cape Town, through the Faculty of Health Sciences. Its vision is to be a centre of excellence in health sciences that is locally relevant and globally competitive. Established in 1912, the Faculty hosts the oldest medical school in sub-Saharan Africa, and the top-rated faculty of health sciences on the African continent. The Department of Medicine at the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Groote Schuur Hospital (GSH) is a large clinical and academic department which plays a leading role in medical education and research, and provides clinical services to the population of the Western Cape and, in the case of our highly specialised services, to patients throughout Southern Africa.
