Welcome to our new staff member Megan Petersen
Welcome to Mrs Megan Peterson as Senior Scientific Officer in the Division of Clinical Anatomy and Biology Anthropology.
Megan Petersen (MSc. Medical Biosciences, 2018), BSc. Honours Medical Biosciences cum laude 2015, University of the Western Cape (UWC). Megan’s past research focused on the in vitro effects of two South African plant extracts on hydrogen peroxide-induced neuronal toxicity. While completing her Masters, she worked first as a Practical Demonstrator in Medical Biosciences and then an Associate Lecturer in Anatomy at the Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Sciences at UWC. In 2017 she was employed as a Part-time Lecturer at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology (CPUT) where she taught Anatomy at the Department of Emergency Medical Sciences. In 2018, she was awarded a 1-year NRF internship with CPUT where she continued teaching but also gained insight into various departmental processes such as academic planning, moderation, undergraduate admissions and the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) programme. She is also involved in a community outreach programme initiated by her mentor Dr. Kareemah Gamieldien from CPUT, that reaches out to Life Sciences matriculants in Cape Town schools, where she is part of a team that tutors the subject in English and Afrikaans. This programme hopes to help more matric learners qualify for tertiary programmes in the medical field.
We look forward to working closely with Megan during her stay at UCT and wish her a happy and fulfilling career in our department.
