Professor Myer is a leading epidemiologist with 25 years of experience in research and training in South Africa. He currently serves as Professor and Head of the Division of Epidemiology & Biostatistics, providing leadership in research methods to the School and Faculty of Health Sicences. With advanced training in clinical medicine, social sciences and epidemiology & biostatistics, his work focuses on improving women's, maternal and child health in southern Africa. His teaching at UCT includes supervision of Masters and Doctoral students while lecturing in a range of epidemiology and biostatistics courses in the School of Public Health.
Historically Prof Myer's research focused on priority infections in South Africa, particularly HIV, tuberculosis, sexually transmitted infections, with seminal contributions around antiretroviral therapy in pregnant and breastfeeding women living with HIV. More recently his projects have expanded to include the emerging epidemics of obesity and related non-communicable conditions as they affect women and families in South Africa. Linked to this, his work in epidemiologic research methods includes a wide range of observational and experimental designs and he routinely consults on methodological issues in study design, conduct and analysis. As part of this he leads a large research group in the Division and oversees a community-based primary care research facility at the Gugulethu Community Health Centre in Cape Town.
