Mitchell’s Plain Hospital is a busy district hospital that provides clinical services for the Mitchells Plain sub-district of the Cape Metropolitan area.  The paediatric services provide Level 1/2 care for an under-13 childhood population of approximately 160 000 children – the largest child population of any subdistrict in Metro West. 

As part of the UCT-affiliated hospital complex, the paediatric department undertakes undergraduate teaching (6th year general paediatrics, and local and international student electives) and postgraduate teaching (Diploma in Child Health bedside clinical teaching).

In-patient Services


General Paediatrics: 33 beds
Neonatology: Nursery 9 beds (2 high care beds); Kangaroo Mother Care beds: 10 beds
ENT surgery: 1 list a week

Out-patient Services


General Paediatric Outpatients: 3 days per week
ENT clinic: 1 day per week
