Changing Times with Technologies - NMC Horizon Reports
Over the past 16 years the annual publication of the New Media Consortium (NMC) Horizon Report has offered informed insights into what to expect from the rapidly advancing and emerging field of technology in Higher Education (HEd). This report provided a concise, easily readable text outlining the anticipated innovations in technologies, as well as the trends and challenges in terms of a timeline of short, medium and long-term forecasts. The Creative Commons licence (attribution only) of these reports allows us to freely duplicate and replicate the information.
Each report is generated from collaboration with a HiEd Expert Panel whose work-in-progress has been open and transparent for online perusal and comment here. In 2018 there were 71 community members involved in the project. The preview for the 2018 Report is here. Most exciting for us is the acknowledgement of Open Educational Resources and their proliferation in Higher Education as a mid-term trend.
However the partnership of EDUCAUSE with NMC has come to a sudden halt. A news report on EdScoop (Lestch, January 3, 2018) revealed that on December 18, 2017 an unexpected announcement revealed insolvency of NMC with immediate closure. EDUCAUSE has now acquired the rights to continue the publication of future Horizon Reports. The completed 2018 Report is expected to be released later this year.
