The South African Child Gauge is an annual publication of the Children’s Institute that tracks progress towards the realisation of children’s socio-economic rights, and aims to make the latest research evidence accessible to key decision-makers in government and civil society in order to promote evidence-based policy and programming.

The 2019 issue focuses attention on child and adolescent health, reflecting on recent progress, identifying current and emerging challenges, and showcasing examples of promising practice. It motivates for a life course approach and greater investment in early childhood and adolescence to disrupt the intergenerational cycles of violence, poverty and malnutrition, identifying opportunities to build a more resilient and responsive health care system, interrogating the role of big food, tobacco and alcohol in fuelling the rise of non-communicable diseases, and advocating for intersectoral collaboration to address the social and environmental determinants of child health.

In a Social Responsiveness lecture through the Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health, Lori Lake, editor of the 2019 South African Child Gauge presents on the latest edition. The Zoom presentation was recorded and is available here.
