20 Feb 2020

Our recent biennial Physicians Conference was held at the River Club in Observatory, 20-23 February 2020. For the 1st time in the history of the conference this was a joint initiative with our colleagues from Stellenbosch University. This collaboration was highly successful and we hope to continue this going forward. The theme of the conference was Evidence Based Medicine. In light of this we also collaborated with the BMJ who were ably represented by Dr Julie Costello from the UK who gave two presentation on this subject.

The conference was very well attended with more than 300 registrations and opened  with several hands-on workshops covering a variety of medical disciplines. These were very well received. Two eponymous lectures were delivered. The Arthur Landau Lecture was given by Professor Motala from UKZN with an overview of her research career in diabetes. The Frank Forman Lecture was given by Professor Taylor who enlightened the audience on Astrophysics in the era of Big Data.  This was followed by 3 days of lectures by experts from both institutions, as well as several medical quizzes. The standard of the presentations was superb and feedback from delegates was excellent. Due to several large unrestricted educational grants we were able to fully sponsor all consultants as well as 50 medical students. In addition we were able to offer partial sponsorship to medical registrars. The next conference will be held in 2022.
